Welcome to Opal !

This project is a community effort to develop and support the OPAL VoIP library. OPAL implements the commonly used protocols used to send voice, video and fax data over IP networks.

Originally part of the OpenH323 project, OpalVoip has grown to include SIP and IAX2. OPAL is released under the Mozilla Public License 1.0 Open Source license.

Opal runs on Linux, Windows, MacOSX, xBSD, Solaris, and Windows Mobile.

Maintenance release snapshot downloads of the Lalande release (PTLib v2.6.2 & OPAL v3.6.2) are now available.

This particular version has had some significant performance testing done for multiple simultaneous calls on a Linux system. Half a million calls made 50 at a time, no leaks or crashes!

Release condidate snapshot downloads of the Lalande release (PTLib v2.6.0 & OPAL v3.6.0) are now available. This is the last step on this becoming our standard stable release, superceding the Wolf release.

Main features are:

  • Instant Messaging. Using several different “standards”: RFC4975, MSRP, T.140, SIP-IM etc etc.
  • Much improved support for SIP event handling (SUBSCRIBE/NOTIFY/PUBLISH) using factories so more event packages can be added easily.
  • Support for SIP “dialog” event package.
  • Support for Shared Line Appearance (aka Multiple Line Appearance, Bridged Line Appearance or Busy Lamp Field)
  • Significant improvements in IPv6 support (thanks Yuri Kiryanov!)
  • Major enhancements to the video rate controller.
  • Removal of the old H.263 ffmpeg plug in and enhancement of the H.263-1998 plug it to take its place.
  • H.224 support (H.323 only).
  • SBC audio codec plug in.
  • G.722 audio codec plug in.
  • CELT audio codec plug in.
  • SWIG support for use in other languages, Java first.
  • Much improved multi-platform sample GUI client, OpenPhone. Now standard test environment replacing simpleOPAL.
